The event was jointly organized by our Center and the Department of History in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. During the conference, Professor Dr. Suraiya Faroqhi engaged with our students.
Ibn Haldun University faculty member Prof. Dr. Suraiya Faroqhi, one of the world's leading Ottoman historians, gave a lecture titled "Half of the Ottoman Subjects: Women Trying to Protect Themselves and Their Children" at Troia Cultural Centre, Sevim Buluç Auditorium.
In the conference co-organised by the Balkan and Aegean Application and Research Centre and the History Department of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Prof. Dr. Suraiya Faroqhi emphasised the sources and prominent studies in the literature on family, women and children in the Ottoman period. Faroqhi then touched upon the problems of marriage, divorce, inheritance and maintenance of women in various cities in Anatolia, the Middle East and North Africa in the 15th-18th centuries of the Ottoman period. She also gave examples of the struggles of Ottoman women to protect the law and rights of themselves and their children under Sharia law. Prof. Dr Faroqhi answered the questions of the students after his presentation.
After the conference, which attracted great interest of our academicians and students, Prof. Dr. Suraiya Faroqhi chatted with the students and signed his books. On 18 November 2023, with the participation of Prof. Dr. Suraiya Faroqhi and LEE Department of History MA and PhD students, a technical trip to the Troy Museum and ruins was organized under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Reyhan Körpe.
